I feel like I want to speak out about this diet culture issue as so many (actually, five families) I know seem to be going through a similar thing right now.
I have a number of friends with teenage daughters and the girls are suffering from eating disorders and eating / exercise related issues.
We know lockdown has made mental health a much bigger issue. I personally suddenly feel surrounded by young girls especially with these issues. And parents who are worried sick not knowing what to do for the best because the girls don’t want to be told what to do.
Diet culture and Instagram / peer pressure etc. is so, so prominent. My daughter is almost nine and I see in in her too. She thinks she’s fat.
I remember it so well myself, being one of those girls once. I really hated the way I looked and nobody could persuade me otherwise.
A teenage girl WILL hide her feelings and her eating disorder. And very often the parent doesn’t find out until it’s at a critical stage or very ingrained. I can speak from personal experience on this one.
I want to keep this brief, but also raise it in case anyone needs guidance or support.
You know that often we don’t even realise that we ourselves are reinforcing negative viewpoints or mindset because of our own conditioning. Our daughters notice when we say ‘I look awful, I need to loose weight’.
Self Care, Self Awareness & Self Compassion
It’s a good idea to develop more AWARENESS and SELF COMPASSION so we pass that down.
SELF CARE is also so important. You cannot help others if you are struggling. And when our kids see us taking good care of ourselves, they are much more likely to take care of themselves too.
